In a thermal inkjet system the ink reservoir, the filter and the printhead are one sealed assembly. There is no separate printhead to clean, align or replace — the nozzle plate is part of the cartridge.
This is why a TIJ cartridge fails differently from a continuous inkjet (CIJ) system. There is no ink recirculation loop and no solvent top-up; instead, a nozzle that dries out during a long stop stays dry, and the whole cartridge is replaced when it does.
It also explains why TIJ ink is formulated the way it is. Viscosity has to sit in a narrow band so the heater element can eject a drop reliably, and surface tension has to be low enough to wet a low-energy plastic surface. Change the substrate and you have to change the ink, not adjust the printer.
